Living Donor Liver Transplantation

A portion of a healthy person’s liver can be used to transplant another person. The recipient is usually a child; however, adults can also be transplanted using living liver donors. The potential donor has to undergo a series of tests to make sure he/she is a suitable donor. When properly selected, the risk to the donor is very small. One of the main advantages of this technique is that the transplant surgery can be "scheduled" and finished before the recipient gets too sick. The liver transplant surgeons performed the only successful living donor liver transplant in Houston in 1999.
